8 Best Things About Babywearing

Babywearing is something I knew about before Brendan was born but I always thought it is just another way of transporting your baby from A to B. Since becoming a mother the second time it transpired that is so much more.

Here are my 8 reasons why I think it is the absolute best.

1# Perfect when you have a toddler around. I am not necessary run after Brendan 24/7 as in actual running. He loves independent play (tips on how I encourage it are here) at home and when we are out we are either in a safe environment like a park or playground or he is good at holding my hands crossing roads and walking on streets. It is more like getting his dinner ready / changing his nappy / getting his drink / dress him and always always hug him as and when I can. So having Caelan on me in a baby wrap and have 2 free hands is absolutely perfect to manage it all.

2# Having my baby close by. Kissing his little head. Smell him (I mean baby smell is like drugs for mums, right? That is what keeps us going) or just simply looking at him for long minutes and asking myself “How the hell is he so perfect?”

3# Makes nap time so much easier. I remember when Brendan was born and getting him to nap was most of the time a hit-and-miss. Sometimes it took 5 minutes to put him down sometimes hours. Now with Caelan it is much easier. After feeding / burping and a little play he goes back to the wrap and within 10 minutes he drifts off nice and quiet. His little head drops to my chest and he is off. I can carry on doing what I have been. There are times when he needs a bit of extra shushing but that is when he is either have a dirty nappy I didn’t realise or he is hungry STILL (that is most likely).

4# Help to raise a content baby. There were times in the first 2-4 months with Brendan when we thought he has colic. The hour long crying sometimes 2 days in the row. When you have no clue why. So far, we didn’t have anything like that with Caelan. I know it could be because we are second time parents now and kind of know what we are doing but I do believe it is because he is close to me almost all the time in the wrap. Hears my heartbeat as he heard it when he was still inside. My moves / my voice / he is tucked into a small space like he was before. Babywearing imitates the womb and in the 4th trimester (first 3 months) that is what newborns want. It is like a womb outside.

5# Babywearing helps prevent over-stimulation the baby. Cealan always facing inwards, on the front, back or side. That is why he is able to turn his face away and switch off from the world if needs be. Babywearing is a fail-safe way to calm him down when I think he has become overstimulated which he can do with Brendan constantly singing / running and generally being loud around him / me.

6# As a breastfeeder it makes it so easy on-the-go. I don’t have to have an extra piece of muslin or any kind of cover when I am breastfeeding in public (which I do all the time). I use the wrap to conceal the bits which are not for people to see. It makes it less clumsy than having another piece of material on top of Caelan’s head.

7# Keeps me fit. Although the wrap is VERY comfortable it does add an extra few kilos (5kg – thanks Caelan, my monster baby) to my normal body weight I have to lug around all day. No gym needed for this mum. I love my new Liliputi wrap as it distributes the weight evenly.

8# Makes travelling so easy. Having just Brendan in the pram when we go for a longer trip or not taking the pram at all to the park is the best. Since we don’t drive and use mainly public transport it is always a struggle whether we are going to fit on the bus or not. When the Man is around we can always just collapse the pram if Brendan is not a sleep and get on. But mainly it is so much quicker to get around with a single pram and a wrap.

I have so many compliments from family and friends on how easy I make it look with the 2 of them. But trust me it is not easy! Just easiER and that is definitely due to having the wrap.
